December 21st is the official first day of winter, however living in northern Ontario, winter’s attributes come long before that. It’s been a while since i’ve written on here but I figured the first official day of winter is a good day for a post. Today I’m going to talk about what winter is really like in Canada, and specifically Northern Ontario.

To start off, and I’m sure many non Canadians have already been told this, but I just wanted to clear the air about our living conditions… We do not live in igloos! Normal houses here thank you very much. Igloos seem to be quite the topic with Canadian winter. That’s beside the point though.

One thing that really screams winter is here is the negative sign in front of the temperature and snow staying on the ground longer than a week. Winter likes to trick us here, by giving us multiple big snow storms, and then melting a day or two later. Safe to say though that we are definitely in winter here now, as the snow is not going anywhere for a while.

Sunrise a week ago, with just a touch of snow.

With winter comes Christmas, and I must say it really doesn’t feel like Christmas is as close as it is. With only being four days away, today is the first day I’m really going to a Christmas party, with limited people of course thanks to Covid. I blame Covid for the lack of Christmas festivities in general actually. Putting up the Christmas tree this year not only reminded me that it is actually the holiday season, but just how annoying my cats are.

No broken bulbs YET…

I also made my first batch of Christmas cookies with my boyfriend yesterday, and it was nice to actually do something holiday related. I say this every year, but it doesn’t feel like Christmas is as close as it is.

Before…
…and after! Definitely some creative decorating here.

That’s all from me, but I hope this got you thinking about the things that really say winter to you! Thanks for reading everyone!
